Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars: A Theatrical Satire on South Africa's Political Landscape Finds Its Stage at The South African State Theatre

In a gripping return to the stage, Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars, directed by the 2022 Standard Bank Young Artists (SBYA) for Theatre, Theatre Duo - Billy Langa and Mahlatsi Mokgonyana, takes centre stage at The South African State Theatre from November 17th to December 3rd. This highly contemporary satire, penned by the prolific J.Bobs Tshabalala 2020 SBYA for Theatre, offers an incisive and entertaining exploration of the intricate relationships between politicians and businessmen in modern-day South Africa.

Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars delves into the deliberate and interconnected actions of contemporary South African political figures, unravelling the web of corruption that contributes to the country's current tumultuous political climate. The play exposes the elitist culture of greed perpetuated by the collusion between politicians and businessmen, all communicated through the clever use of "Comrade-speak" – a linguistic dance that reinforces the farce of promised socio-political revolution.

The cast, featuring acclaimed actors such as Lebohang Masimola, Xolile Benjamin Gama, Tshireletso Nkoane, Anelisa Phewa, and Moagi Benjamin Kai, brings to life the characters at the heart of this satire. Directed by the dynamic Theatre Duo, Billy Langa and Mahlatsi Mokgonyana, the production boasts a stellar creative team, including Set & Lighting Design by Denis Hutchinson, Music and Sound Design by Jannous Aukema, Movement Direction by Ernest ‘Ginger’ Baleni, Projection Design by Nikki Pilkington, and Costume Design by Lethabo Bereng.

Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars serves as a powerful lens, exposing the behind-the-scenes dealings that often disadvantage the impoverished majority while promising a democratic revolution. With a nod to pseudo-cadres and politically connected businessmen, the play brings to light the issues plaguing society – from sewage-filled streets to critical infrastructure breakdowns.

This theatrical run is made possible through the generous support of Standard Bank, emphasizing the bank's commitment to investing in the arts in South Africa. Reflecting on this collaboration, Yolisa Khoza Head of Brand experience at Standard Bank stated, "We believe in the transformative power of the arts to challenge and inspire. Supporting productions like Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars aligns with our commitment to fostering creativity and dialogue that can lead to positive change in our society."

Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars was originally produced by The Market Theatre and in association with National Arts Festival. Standard Bank cardholders can enjoy a 30% discount on tickets, with terms and conditions applying.
