Wits Standard Bank Piano Festival

Introducing the Wits Standard Bank Piano Festival

The Wits Music Department is thrilled to announce the inaugural WITS STANDARD BANK PIANO FESTIVAL, set to take place from 7 – 8 March in the beautiful Chris Seabrooke Music Hall at Wits University, Johannesburg. This intimate 180-seater venue, specifically designed for acoustic chamber music, boasts a world-class Shigeru Kawai concert grand piano, renowned for its exquisite tone.

South Africa has a rich jazz piano tradition, shaped by a distinctive musical heritage. It is only fitting to celebrate this art form with a dedicated festival. Additionally, given that the piano was invented in Italy around 1700, the showcase includes a classical programme to honour the instrument’s European roots.

The festival commenced with an exclusive (by invitation only) launch event on 22 February, featuring the award-winning Italian piano duo, Spina & Benignetti, performing a captivating programme of four hands on one piano.

The main festival programme kicks off on 7 March, showcasing two exceptional South African pianists, Kyle Shepherd and Afrika Mkhize, each performing a set that highlights their unique styles.

On 8 March, audiences will be treated to an unforgettable performance by celebrated pianist Nduduzo Makhathini.

The festival concludes on 9 March at 15:00 with two classical performances. The first features the Karlsruhe Concert Duo, comprising German musicians Dagmar Hartmann (piano) and Reinhard Armleder (cello). The second and final concert presents Berlin-based pianist Jan Gerdes, performing contemporary African piano compositions, including works by South African composers from his critically acclaimed recording, East - West - Central - South.

Curated by Carlo Mombelli, the festival is made possible through the generous support of Standard Bank, with additional contributions from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Goethe-Institut.

“Standard Bank’s continued investment in the arts is reflected in this festival’s programme, which proudly features past recipients of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz, Afrika Mkhize (2012), Kyle Shepherd (2014) and Nduduzo Makhathini (2015),” says Bonga Sebesho Group Head of Sponsorships at Standard Bank.

"The awards have played a pivotal role in recognising and nurturing exceptional South African talent and we remain committed to providing platforms that celebrate and elevate the artistic excellence of our country," concludes Sebesho.

This exciting new festival promises to become a staple on the South African music calendar, celebrating the artistry and diversity of piano music across genres and continents.
