Standard Bank African Art Collection

This Africa month, we invite you to explore the treasures of the Standard Bank African Art collection and the Standard Bank Corporate collection.

The Standard Bank African Art Collection, a joint venture with Wits University, is a testament to the rich tapestry of African culture, housed at Wits Arts Museum.

The origin of this collection dates back to 1979, is one of the largest of its kind, and boasts over 6,000 objects from across the continent. It’s a vibrant mosaic of southern African material culture, from wood figurines and drums to masks, clothing, and ceremonial objects. The collection also highlights specialist areas such as intricate beadwork, textiles, and valuable ceramic pieces.

The collection has grown substantially since its establishment, with a significant number of objects hailing from West and Central Africa. More recently, works from East Africa have also found their way into this remarkable collection.

The start of this collection, forty years ago, was driven by a concern for the preservation of a rapidly disappearing cultural heritage of immense diversity and creativity. This heritage was fading not only due to the urbanisation and migration of the Black population and the consequent loss of traditional skills, but also due to the increasing interest of foreign dealers and collectors who were removing these works from their countries of origin.

We also feature stunning contemporary artworks from our Standard Bank Corporate Art Collection – inspired by some of the traditional motifs and pattens in classical African objects and material culture.
