Standard Bank Joy of Jazz

Standard Bank Joy of Jazz is the biggest and most authentic jazz festival on the continent. It is Africa’s premium Jazz destination.
Standard Bank Joy of Jazz made its first appearance at the State Theatre in Pretoria in 1997. The first event took place in Newtown three years later and has grown to become the country’s most significant jazz festival. Artists have come from around the globe – from Japan, the US, the UK, Israel, Cuba, Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Spain and France.
However, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has also consistently showcased South Africa’s homegrown talent. As well as performances from some of the continent’s leading jazz proponents.
In this way the festival has contributed to the cultural exchange between
artists and many international performers have met their local counterparts and subsequently collaborated on various projects.
Importantly, the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival has also seen a phenomenal growth in the number of emerging jazz artists who have been given exposure and a platform to perform before discerning audiences. Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz winners also appear at the festival and in the past have included amongst others; Shannon Mowday, Gloria Bosman, Tutu Puoane, Kesivan Naidoo, Melanie Scholtz, Shane Cooper, Kyle Shepherd and Concord Nkabinde. Most have gone on to perform at stages around the globe.
