The 2019 Standard Bank Jazz Festival (SBJF)

The sounds of award-winning jazz from South Africa’s musical past and present head to Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) this             27 June – 7 July for the 32nd edition of the celebrated Standard Bank Jazz Festival.

Kicking off this year’s jazz festival is a four-night programme showcasing a host of Big Band ensembles. Taking the stage will be The Massive Funk Big Band featuring top South African and European musicians, led this time around by Swedish jazz legend Nils Landgren. South African trumpeter and composer Marcus Wyatt’s 17-piece ZAR Orchestra will also be bringing their SAMA-award-winning, genre-defying take on jazz music’s Big Band sound. As always, audiences can expect breathtaking performances from the talented student musicians of the Standard Bank National Schools Big Band, conducted this year by renowned trombonist and educator Justin Sasman.

The eclectic American band, Too Many Zooz (US) brings their uniquely energetic brand of jazz to the festival.

Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, Mandla Mlangeni provides festival-goers with a much-anticipated glimpse into his explorations of avant-garde African jazz, through performances with the African jazz fusion ensemble, Tune Recreation Committee, as well as a revisiting of Amandla Freedom Ensemble’s 12-track odyssey, Born to Be Black.

The 2013 SBYA, bassist and composer, Shane Cooper brings his exciting band, Mabuta to showcase their new record, Welcome to this World. The iconic and award winning band Freshlyground will be there alongside Mafikizolo and the Grammy award winning Scathamiya group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

● The SBJF is on from 27 June to 9 July at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda and includes one of the biggest jazz development programmes on the continent, the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival.
